1. Who We Are
|
|
|
ProCon.org is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit public charity that has no government affiliations of any kind.
Our purpose is educational. We do not express opinions on our research projects ("issue sites"), and we believe that most people care about their community, their state and their country, have common sense and good judgment and can make better decisions if the large volume of data and rhetoric on an issue is reduced to a fairly and reasonably crafted pro-con presentation.
Our goal is to research issues that we feel are complicated and important and work to present them in a balanced, comprehensive, straightforward, and primarily pro-con format for free and without advertising on the internet.
Benjamin Franklin commented on the practical use of pros and cons over 235 years ago:
"When these difficult Cases occur, they are difficult chiefly because while we have them under Consideration all the Reasons pro and con are not present to the Mind at the same time... To get over this, my Way is, to divide half a Sheet of Paper by a Line into two Columns, writing over the one Pro, and over the other Con.... And tho' the Weight of Reasons cannot be taken with the Precision of Algebraic Quantities, yet when each is thus considered separately and comparatively, and the whole lies before me, I think I can judge better, and am less likely to take a rash Step..."

| 2. Mission Statement |

| 7. Funding |
|
ProCon.org, since its inception on July 12, 2004, has been primarily funded by the A-Mark Foundation which is a nonprofit organization chaired by Steven C. Markoff. Mr. Markoff’s funding goals for ProCon.org have been:
-
To fund ProCon.org through its initial development. Accomplished in 2005 when ProCon.org had six websites in the pro-con format.
-
To ensure that people care about what ProCon.org offered. Accomplished in 2006 when ProCon.org surpassed 4.5 million website sessions and had 23 total media references.
-
To enable ProCon.org to receive sustainable funding going forward. Not yet accomplished. ProCon.org hired a fundraiser in January 2006. She quit in May 2006 when she learned that we still had not received our 501(c)(3) determination letter from the IRS. ProCon.org received its IRS determination letter on March 30, 2007 and a different fundraiser was hired in October 2007.
See our Financial Information page for details on our 2004 – 2007 program service expenditures, management and general expenses, and our fundraising expenses. |

2004-2007 Financial Information for ProCon.org
I. 2007 Financial Summary
In 2007 ProCon.org received total gross income from donations of $725,245 up from $516,726 in 2006. Of our $725,245 in 2007 expenses, $620,836 (91.0%) was spent on program services, $42,674 (6.3%) on management and general expenses, and $18,541 (2.7%) on fundraising expenses. ProCon.org operates with such a high percentage of its expenditures in program services for several reasons including: so far we pay no rent, we incur no accounting expenses, we spend small amounts to yield large amounts of funds raised, our operation is remarkably efficient, and our Chairman has refused a salary since we started.
