April 18, 2008

The New York Times referenced Medical Marijuana ProCon.org in a 04/18/08 article titled “Presidential Candidates on Marijuana” by science columnist John Tierney. The article appeared in the Tierney Lab section of the New York Times blog pages.

The author wrote: “Here are excerpts of what Mr. Obama told the Mail Tribune newspaper in Oregon, one of the states that has legalized medical marijuana...” The hyperlink pointed to the Medical Marijuana ProCon.org page featuring the 2008 presidential candidates and their views on medical marijuana.

April 14, 2008

The Oregonian, the largest circulating newspaper in the Pacific Northwest and among the top 30 largest circulating papers in the United States., in an Apr. 14, 2008 opinion article by “Community Writer” John Knapp titled "A Sane Way to Deal with Illegal Immigration" referred readers to only one website Immigration ProCon.org. The article appeared in Oregonlive.com, the online component of The Oregonian, and stated in part:

“I feel because this [illegal immigration] is such a major issue right now that we all need to do some homework, and take some personal responsibility for understanding more about this problem. I did find a website that provided me with a thorough enough background on the subject of legal and illegal immigration that I feel compelled to recommend it to you, the readers of The Oregonian. http://www.immigrationprocon.org/ .”

MobLogic.tv, a CBS-owned news, politics, and pop culture show on the Internet, referenced our website Prostitution ProCon.org three times in its Apr. 3, 2008 article titled “Look, Don’t Touch” that accompanied its online broadcast “Why is Porn Legal?” with host Lindsay Campbell.

The article linked to our Top 10 pro and con arguments in the prostitution debate (twice) as well as our international chart summarizing prostitution policies in over 50 countries.

45. WGOW-FM / Chattanooga, Tennessee
March 11, 2008

WGOW (102.3 FM), an ABC radio affiliate in Chattanooga, Tennessee, interviewed ProCon.org's Managing Editor about the pros and cons of legalizing prostitution. The hosts, Robert T. Nash and MaryAnne Williams, took turns asking questions related to feminism, economics, enforcement, motivations, and other issues related to prostitution.

They referenced ProCon.org as a “great website” and told their listeners “I strongly suggest that you check it out.” The entire interview lasted about 15 minutes long. An audio clip of the interview will be posted on this website as soon as it becomes available.

The Pace Press, the newspaper serving Pace University since 1948, in a Feb. 13, 2008 article by Carla Aponte titled "Medical marijuana dispensaries may visit East Coast" referred readers to Medical Marijuana ProCon.org. We were referenced right after CNN in the second paragraph of the feature story:

We were listed ahead of two other sites -- the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Lime.com, an online media center that promotes “healthy living with a twist,” published an article on its homepage on January 22, 2008 that referenced our website Milk ProCon.org. The article was titled “Worried About Soy?,” and it included a reference and a link to our question “Is there any safety or nutritional difference in milk from cows supplemented with hormones such as rbST and milk from cows not supplemented with hormones?”

January 6, 2008

American Thinker, a daily conservative internet publication devoted to a “thoughtful exploration of issues of importance to Americans,” referenced Israeli-Palestinian ProCon.org in its article titled “The Arab ‘Right of Return’ to Israel” by Rachel Neuwirth.

The reference was a direct link to the “How much international aid does Palestine receive?” question on the Israeli-Palestinian website.

The Charlotte Observer, the largest circulating daily newspaper in North and South Carolina, published a reference to the 2008 Election ProCon.org website in its article titled “5 Ways to Start a Resolution” by Lesa Kastanas.

The reference read as follows:

“Be heard: There's an election coming up -- or haven't you heard? If you haven't registered to vote, make this priority one or you could be the disenfranchised hanging chad poster child of 2008... Don't know enough about the candidates? Check out 2008electionprocon.org.”

39. XM Radio “POTUS ‘08” / Washington, D.C.
December 13, 2007

XM Radio, on its national channel “POTUS ‘08” [President of the United States 2008] in a program called 1600, interviewed ProCon.org’s Managing Editor about the website 2008 Election ProCon.org. The host of 1600, Rebecca Roberts (also on NPR’s Morning Edition and PRI’s The World), asked questions about the site’s origins, mission, number of candidates featured, and to what extent the candidates were participating.

The interview lasted about 8 minutes and was broadcast live. XM Radio has 8 million subscribers as of Dec. 13, 2007.

Associated Content, an online news content provider based in Denver, Colorado that is considered among the top 2,500 most popular websites on the Internet (according to Alexa.com in Nov. 2007), wrote an article about Immigration ProCon.org titled “ProCon.org: New Website Presents Both Sides of Illegal Immigration.”

The article discussed the newest ProCon.org website, and described the organization in part as follows:

“ProCon.org is a nonpartisan non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public about complicated social issues such as illegal immigration. ProCon.org was formed in 2004 and has addressed a variety of issues including the Iraq War, medical marijuana, origins of sexual orientation, the ACLU, and electronic voting machines among others. ProCon.org's seeks to present complicated, divisive issues in a balanced and educated way by utilizing a pro vs. con format.”

The Houston Chronicle, the largest daily newspaper in Texas and the 9th largest newspaper in the United States (as of March 2007), published an article about Immigration ProCon.org titled “Pros and Cons of Deportation” in its Nov. 26, 2007 blog. The article said in part:

The site lays out the pros and cons of key questions and issues surrounding immigration.

36. The Rob Sherman Show / Chicago, Illinois
November 19, 2007

WJJG (1530 AM), a Chicago-based radio station, featured a one-hour interview with ProCon.org's Managing Editor on The Rob Sherman Show hosted by social activist Rob Sherman.

Among other compliments, Mr. Sherman called ProCon.org “marvelous” on air and on his website. Specific items of discussion included the purpose of ProCon.org, its funding, and its various existing topics including the origins of sexual orientation, the ACLU, and the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. Also discussed were upcoming topics such as illegal immigration and insider trading by Congress.

Neither the show’s producer nor the station itself record the programs, so we do not have an audio copy of the interview to share.

November 9, 2007

Dairy Field, a 102-year old milk industry trade magazine, based in Deerfield, Illinois, published an article about Milk ProCon.org titled “The pros and cons of milk” by the magazine’s editor, James Dudlicek.

This article appeared on the Dairy Field blog on November 9, 2007, and it said that Milk ProCon.org was “well organized,” “a good resource,” and:

“A casual journey through the site reveals that the pros and cons are pretty evenly matched, though I think pro-dairy holds a slight edge. In any case, I find MilkProCon.org to be a useful educational tool.”

34. LATV / Los Angeles, California
October 11, 2007

LATV, a television station based in Los Angeles, California with 13 nationwide affiliates and partially owned by the Washington Post’s parent company, interviewed ProCon.org's Managing Editor about medical marijuana. The result was two 5-minute segments on the program LATV Central that aired at 7:15 PM and 7:45 PM on October 11, 2007. The host was Viviana Vigil (host of LATV Live and Drive-Thru) and the producer was Marcela Pezet (produced Asi Se Hace,, acted in Kilmetro 31, and hosted Al Banquillo). The discussion revolved around the conflict between state laws validating medical marijuana and federal laws that ban any use of marijuana – medical or otherwise. The program will be rebroadcast on Nov. 22, 2007.

The Baker County Standard, a daily newspaper based in Macclenny, Florida, published an editorial titled “As I See It” by Blake Thomas on August 1, 2007 where the author mentioned our website Under God ProCon.org.

The article discussed religious references to “’God’ or some higher power” in all 50 state constitutions, and it provided several examples of those references. It listed only one source for all the information in the article: “(source: www.undergodprocon.org).”

31. Congressional Research Service / Washington, D.C.
July 27, 2007

The Congressional Research Service (CRS), a division of the Library of Congress since 1914, published a 48-page meta-report by Mark Eddy, Specialist in Illicit Drug Control Policy in the Domestic Social Policy Division, dated July 27, 2007 and titled “Medical Marijuana: Review and Analysis of Federal and State Policies.”

This report referenced Medical Marijuana ProCon.org four times, including one blurb stating:

“ProCon.org, a nonprofit and nonpartisan publication education foundation, has identified 21 national public opinion polls that asked questions about medical marijuana from 1995 to the present. Respondents in every poll were in favor of medical marijuana by substantial margins, ranging from 60% to 80%.”

CRS has a legal mandate to provide nonpartisan research to members of Congress. We are very pleased that our content was useful to CRS and Congress in helping to analyze medical marijuana policies.

29. Star Tribune / Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota
May 21, 2007

The Star Tribune, a daily newspaper based in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota published an article titled “Tracking the Cost of War” in which journalist Randy Salas reviewed four websites, including US-Iraq ProCon.org, and described the efforts of each to detail Iraq War costs.

US-Iraq ProCon.org was featured in a 194-word description which stated (in part):

“‘Should the U.S. have attacked Iraq?’ Now, there’s a controversial question. Enter ProCon.org to answer it — in a fashion. Like MyWarTax.org, the site aims to avoid partisanship by being strictly informational. It lists hot topics related to the war and presents quotes and published statements representing various positions in the debate — from one- and five-minute overviews to lengthy discourses… Wade through all the rhetoric, check out related facts and figures and then decide how you feel.”

The article was later reprinted in the Times Union (Albany, NY) and the Spartanburg Herald-Journal (Spartanburg, South Carolina), and the Modesto Bee (Modesto, CA).

28. Drug War Chronicle
May 4, 2007

Drug War Chronicle, a leading drug policy newsletter published by Stopthedrugwar.org (DRCNet), referenced Felon Voting ProCon.org in the May 4, 2007 issue. The hyperlinked reference said “An in-depth web site launched this week now provides pro and con arguments on the issue from more than 80 authorities.”

The link pointed to a separate page devoted exclusively to our newest website. Along with a description of the website, the article offered:

“Many DRCNet readers are familiar with the website MedicalMarijuanaProCon.org, an in-depth examination of the medical marijuana issue that features authorities from both sides of the issue addressing a myriad of relevant questions about it. This week the parent organization, ProCon.org launched FelonVotingProCon.org, exploring the issue of felony disenfranchisement featuring comprehensive comments from over 80 pro and con politicians, scholars, judges, activists and other experts.”

Medical News Today, in a 3/15/07 article, "Woman Denied Right to Use Marijuana As Life-Saving Medication" by Catherine Paddock, referred its readers to Medical Marijuana ProCon.org. Medical News Today says it is “the largest independent health and medical news website on the Internet” and that it receives over 2 million unique visitors per month.

The reference said “Click here for Pros and Cons of Medical Marijuana, including summary of active state laws (US)” and the hyperlink pointed to our website on medical marijuana. We were listed ahead of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the only other referenced website.

KSRO (1350 AM), a CNN affiliate in Santa Rosa, California, interviewed ProCon.org's Managing Editor about Drug Enforcement Administration raids on California’s marijuana clinics. The interview was rebroadcast twice for morning commuters in the Bay Area.

Specific items of discussion included Proposition 215, Senate Bill 420, John Vascancellos’ position on cannabis clinic profits, DEA claims on what constitutes profits, marijuana as a Schedule I substance, and more.

102.7 FM (CFRO), a membership-funded radio station in Vancouver, Canada, interviewed ProCon.org’s Managing Editor about our newest website (at the time) Euthanasia ProCon.org.

The interview on CFRO’s program “The Rational” lasted about 13 minutes, and the host, Yasaman Azarpajouh, said that she loved ProCon.org and that instead of using Google to learn about an issue she visits our site instead. She described our staff as a “dream team” of research talent. She encouraged us to continue our good efforts, and that she would continue to remind her listeners about our website.
