23. Star Tribune / Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota
December 11, 2006

 

The Star Tribune, a daily newspaper based in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota published an article titled “Web search: In the News” in which journalist Randy Salas reviewed five major news events and provided a relevant website to learn more about each headline.

For the headline “Iraq War raises concerns” our website US-Iraq ProCon.org was featured in a 67-word description which stated:

“U.S.-Iraq ProCon (usiraq.procon.org) answers the question ‘Should the U.S. have attacked Iraq?’ by looking at various related issues (weapons of mass destruction, Saddam's threat, Iraq's oil) and presenting arguments for and against them by the people and agencies involved. Run by the nonprofit organization ProCon.org, the site doesn't express its opinions but seeks to promote ‘informed citizenship by presenting controversial issues in a simple, nonpartisan pro-con format.’”

22. Wired
November 15, 2006

 

Wired News, a newswire service of Wired Magazine, printed an article by reporter Randy Dotinga on November 15, 2006 titled “Guarded Hope for Dope Reform” in which the Hinchey-Rohrabacher amendment was discussed among other things. This reference contained only one link and it pointed directly to a Medical Marijuana ProCon.org webpage.

21. The Philadelphia Inquirer / Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
November 05, 2006

 

The Philadelphia Inquirer featured Voting Machines ProCon.org on 11/05/06 as one of five recommended election-related websites in its article “Web Winners | Elections” by staff writer Reid Kanaley.

The reference appeared in a Sunday edition of the daily newspaper and stated:

Voting machines. Debate even rages over the reliability of modern voting machines - the very devices meant to avert problems such as the infamous hanging chads. This site presents the pros and cons of the various voting machines now in use, including arguments about their vulnerability to hackers, ability to register a voter's 'intent,' and usability for disabled voters. votingmachines.procon.org

KSRO (1350 AM), a CNN affiliate in Santa Rosa, California, interviewed ProCon.org's Managing Editor about new medical marijuana growing guidelines in California.

The New York Times referenced ACLU ProCon.org in a 09/26/06 article titled “Supporters of A.C.L.U. Call for Ouster of Its Leaders” by Stephanie Strom.

They wrote: “…other independent Web sites already reported and commented on the A.C.L.U., including aclu.procon.org…”

The article referenced many current and former ACLU leaders who appear in the ACLU Structure and Site Sources portions of ACLU ProCon.org.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution referenced ProCon.org in an editorial question and answer feature on 08/09/06. In response to the question: “How is the ACLU funded? By whom? What is its budget?” the editors cited information they found on ACLU ProCon.org. The story was picked up by Cox News Service and reprinted at the Arizona Daily Star on 08/11/06, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette on 08/13/06, and the Berkshire Eagle on 08/20/06.

15. KCUR 89.3 FM / Kansas City, Missouri
August 9, 2006

 

KCUR (89.3 FM), a National Public Radio affiliate in Kansas City, Missouri, interviewed ProCon.org Managing Editor Kamy Akhavan on their morning program “The Walt Bodine Show.”

The show’s host, Walt Bodine (“Kansas City's dean of broadcasting”), and co-host Martha Julian focused the discussion on electronic voting machines and their performance in the Kansas City elections on 08/08/06.

The three minute interview is the first major publicity received by our Voting Machines ProCon.org website.

14. Radiogay.ca / Vancouver, Canada
July 13, 2006

 

RadioGay.ca, an online radio station based in Vancouver, Canada, interviewed ProCon.org’s Managing Editor Kamy Akhavan on their “flagship” program called “UNGLUED!”.

The program was broadcast on Thursday 07/13 and then rebroadcast on Sunday 07/16. Conversation focused mainly on Born Gay ProCon.org although many other issues were discussed including medical marijuana, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and potential new pro-con topics.

After the interview the hosts said on the air: "Good job. Keep up the good work. It is a lot of work. I am amazed at how in depth and how much information is there. I wish this had existed when I was in debate society."

13. The Minnesota Daily
April 25, 2006

 

The Minnesota Daily, in its official editorial response to an FDA statement about medical marijuana, referenced only one website, Medical Marijuana ProCon.org.

They wrote: "The Web site medicalmarijuanaprocon.org has put together a battery of questions with answers from multiple sources on the pro and con sides. These include medical doctors, lawmakers and advocacy group representatives. The scope of opinions runs the gamut, with medical professionals on both sides of the fence."

Stanford University’s radio station KZSU 90.1 FM interviewed ProCon.org’s Managing Editor Kamy Akhavan about medical marijuana on their most popular program “What Does Your Mother Say?”

The program was broadcast throughout the San Francisco area during rush hour. In 35 minutes, Medical Marijuana ProCon.org was mentioned four times. The show’s producer wrote “I can't thank you enough for being on the show tonight. You demonstrated a profound intellect on the subject that blew everyone away.”

11. 60 Minutes / CBS Television
March 12, 2006

 

60 Minutes, a weekly television news magazine on CBS Television, on March 12, 2006 listed Born Gay ProCon.org on its website for a segment titled "The Science of Sexual Orientation." We were one of only three recommended links. The show’s producer, Shari Finkelstein, kindly wrote in an email to ProCon.org:
“Our viewers might be very interested in your website... I will definitely look at your site on other subjects in the future.”

10. Marijuana Policy Project
March 3, 2006

 

The Marijuana Policy Project, on March 3, 2006, mentioned Medical Marijuana ProCon.org in its newsletter to supporters:

9. Kansai Time Out
March, 2006

 

Kansai Time Out, an English-language magazine based in Japan’s Kansai region, featured ProCon.org in their “Insites” section. The section’s author, Jessie Wilson, titled the article “Get Off the Fence” and wrote:

 

“Want to know the world leaders’ justifications for invading Iraq? Wondering if marijuana should be routinely prescribed for chronic pain caused by cancer? For anyone having trouble deciding which side of the fence to sit on, look no further than procon.org. This is a nonpartisan, independent, and nonprofit organization whose goal is to inform the public about controversial issues using facts, news stories, and hundreds of diverse opinions in a pro-con format.”
Kansai Time Out has been in operation since 1977 and has a reported circulation of 10,000 readers.

The show’s host said many complimentary things about ProCon.org on air including:

The Substance Abuse Librarians & Information Specialists (SALIS) wrote an entire article about our medical marijuana website in their Fall 2005 SALIS News publication (Vol. 25, No. 3, pg. 5):

Austin Chronicle, in a 06/20/03 article, “A Quarter Ounce a Day” by Andrew Slaton, referred its readers to Medical Marijuana ProCon.org for “more information about medical marijuana and related matters.”

The article was reprinted in several online blogs and news-based websites. This reference marked the first time that a ProCon.org website received media exposure.
