Jay Rakow, Board Member
Jay previously served as President and a Board Member of The Lincy Foundation, a private foundation endowed by entrepreneur Kirk Kerkorian. During his tenure as President, Jay directed more than $600 Million in grants to charities involved in social services, education, research and international infrastructure projects, and presided over the winding-up of the Foundation and transfer of its $200 Million in remaining assets to UCLA.
Jay also served for more than 15 years as a member of the Board of Directors of The John Tracy Clinic, a free clinic and pre-school that serves children with profound hearing loss and conducts a degree-granting teacher education program in that field. Additionally, Jay served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Civic Mediation, a community mediation program sponsored by the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and has served for the past 10 years as a member of the Cornell University Law School Advisory Council.
Jay and his wife, Beth, co-sponsor the Rakow Seminar in Economic Transitions and Development at the University of Michigan.
A graduate of New York University and the Cornell Law School, Jay practiced law for more than 30 years, first in New York and then in Los Angeles. After serving as a Partner in a prominent law firm, Jay served as Senior V.P. and General Counsel of Paramount Pictures Corporation and subsequently as Senior Executive V.P. and General Counsel of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. In 2004, Jay was inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
In other areas of business, Jay held a senior executive position at Tracinda Corporation, a company owned by Kirk Kerkorian that is the principal shareholder of MGM Resorts International. Subsequently, Jay was a Managing Director of a private equity firm based in Los Angeles that focused on technology-based ventures.
In 2006, Jay taught at Cornell as the Distinguished Practitioner-in-Residence. He has lectured at several other law schools and served as a television panelist on a local business program hosted by Gray Davis prior to Mr. Davis’ tenure as Governor of California. Jay completed advanced mediator training at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University and has mediated the settlement of dozens of legal disputes.
He is a member of the New York, California and District of Columbia Bars.
