IV. Volunteer Research Opportunities
ProCon.org seeks volunteers to help with one or more of the ten research projects listed below. Volunteers receive an interesting research experience, our deepest gratitude, and recognition on the above list of volunteers and interns. To volunteer at ProCon.org, please see the application instructions at the end of the list.
  1. ACLU Historical Timeline: Update the ACLU Historical Timeline. More historical entries from diverse high-quality sources are needed. Events should reflect the most significant elements in the history of the ACLU. All additions need to be provided either as a direct quotation or paraphrased in neutral language for clarity and brevity. Links to sources and PDFs of all primary documents are required for each entry.

  2. Felon Voting and Fines Payment: Research each state's law pertaining to the payment of fines for persons convicted of a crime (felony or misdemeanor). A listing of states that disenfranchise persons convicted of a crime until they pay all court ordered fines will be created. The text of each state law should be located and provided as a PDF of the original primary document.

  3. Medical Marijuana Historical Timeline: Update the Medical Marijuana Historical Timeline. More historical entries from diverse high-quality sources are needed. Events should reflect the most significant elements in the history of medical marijuana. All additions need to be provided either as a direct quotation or paraphrased in neutral language for clarity and brevity. Links to sources and PDFs of all primary documents are required for each entry.

  4. Proofreading: Find and fix any spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, broken links, or any other problems that may need correcting. Send a list of all problems and proposed resolutions by email - one issue website at a time.

  5. State Educational Standards (Grade 9-12) Met by Using ProCon.org: Find the grades 9-12 state educational standards for all 50 states and write the number, name, and description of each standard that you think can be met by teachers who use ProCon.org in the classroom. Include a PDF of those standards. Reference only the latest official version of the state standards. We will solicit educational professionals to review this work prior to posting on the ProCon.org.

  6. State Felon Voting Laws: Update our resource on state felon voting laws to ascertain whether or not any state law concerning felon voting has changed since the page was last updated. In addition, for those states that do not already have it, the text of each state law should be located and provided as a PDF of the original primary document.

  7. State Laws Concerning the Pledge of Allegiance: Review our resource on state laws concerning the recital of the pledge of allegiance in schools with any state law concerning the recitation of the pledge of allegiance that may have changed since the resource was posted. The text of each state law should be located and provided as a PDF of the original primary document.

  8. State Misdemeanor Voting Laws: Research each states law concerning misdemeanor convictions and how they affect a persons ability to vote. A listing of states that disenfranchise persons convicted of a misdemeanor will be created. The text of each state law should be located and provided as a PDF of the original primary document.

  9. Undocumented Immigration Statistics: This project consists of updating the following two resources: Population Estimates of Undocumented Immigrants in the US, 1970 - 2006 & Demographics: Countries of Origin, States of Residence, and Employment Data. For each of these resources, the most current reports available should be substitited for older ones. All charts and graphics will need to be updated with current information found in recently published reports.

  10. US Executions Database: Research and build a database of all legal executions carried out in the United States. The database will include information on race, age, gender, crime committed, and method of execution.
